Iran is willing to reinitiate atomic discussions with the United States on condition that it is approached with "respect" and "honor", Tehran's top diplomat has declared.

Abbas Araghchi said only diplomacy worked, and disclosed recent overtures had originated from go-betweens to resume talks with the Trump administration. He claimed Iran possessed no secret atomic facilities, and Iran was not yet able to allow the global atomic watchdog to visit attacked atomic facilities for safety concerns.

Walking a Complex Path

Araghchi is walking a difficult path since Iran does not want be perceived to be operating from a position of disadvantage, and he insisted repeatedly that Iran had arisen more powerful defensively and psychologically from the joint assault on its atomic facilities in June.

He was addressing at a strategic meeting in Tehran where he reiterated that Iran had "a fundamental entitlement to process nuclear material within its borders that it will never give up" – the main reason of the impasse in the earlier negotiations.

Earlier Negotiations Abruptly Terminated

The prior phases of negotiations between the US and Iran were brought to an abrupt and bitter conclusion on 12 June when the Israeli government, with US support, attacked Iranian nuclear sites in a two-week conflict that concluded with the US president claiming the facilities had been obliterated. Subsequently, Western states employed their privilege to reinstate global restrictions, but Iran maintains they have not had a substantial consequence.

Perfect Agreement Suggested

Tehran representatives claimed they felt they had achieved a "magic solution" to the enrichment issue in prior discussions, when it was settled an Iran-based consortium with Washington's engagement could enrich uranium. The two nations would have been able to assert triumph since domestic enrichment would have remained and the US could be confident that Iran's enrichment initiative was exclusively peaceful.

It had not been decided in the talks that American atomic experts could function inside Iran, but that was a logical implication of the consortium proposal. Officials stated repeatedly they had reached agreement with Washington's diplomat Steve Witkoff only for the agreement to disintegrate due to "opponents in the US".

Current Status

Iranian officials stated the partnership proposal was now no longer available, but it seems highly likely the offer could be resurrected in certain ways if talks reopen.

Trump last week said he had been getting signals that Iran desired to reopen negotiations, but confidentially Iranian officials state they are not yet getting consistent overtures from the United States either straightforwardly or from key regional mediators, such as Qatar, the Egyptian leadership, the Omani authorities and the Saudi kingdom. The Tehran's diplomatic corps has been accused of passivity in the wake of Washington's unmediated tactics, but Iran states negotiations is not part of a show.

In his address to the forum, designed to paint the US as a controlling nation that exploits the idea of global regulations, Araghchi stated the two-week conflict revealed the conflict could not be ended by combat operations. He stated the attacks commenced with a US demand for an total Iran submission and ended with an absolute demand for a truce.
