Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The group of women also featured experts in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
