An Prediction Market Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.
A single trader, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Probability Spikes Before News Break
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
But these probabilities had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Politicians are starting to take note.
A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
